Harbor Freight Tools Donates to Habitat for Humanity Restore

Harbor Freight Tools to present Harbor Freight Gift cards for $2,000 for tools and equipment to be used on community projects.

Harbor Freight Tools opened its doors to the Anderson community in July, 2019, at 3035 North Main Street, which is the 19th Harbor Freight Tools store in South Carolina. Harbor Freight is a national chain that first opened its first store in 1977. The Anderson location is a 15,000-square-foot store stocked with a wide selection of tools and accessories for most any project.

Habitat For Humanity Restore is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that accepts overflow items from remodeling projects and home goods. The Habitat Restore resells donations received to the general public to fund their mission of building and providing affordable shelter to people in need.

On Friday, April 3rd, at 10 o’clock, Harbor Freight Tools of Anderson store manager Lacey Taylor will make a donation of $2,000 in Harbor Freight gift cards to Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County at their Restore location on Murray Avenue. The gift will be used to purchase tools and equipment at the Harbor Freight Anderson store toward supporting the Habitat Restore mission of providing shelter in Anderson County.

This donation is the second donation that Harbor Freight Tools has made to the Anderson community. Recently, Harbor Freight Tools of Anderson donated two loads of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to AnMed Health for healthcare professionals’ protection during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Anderson County appreciates Harbor Freight’s caring and being an active member of our community and in meeting the needs of our citizens,” said County Council Chairman Tommy Dunn.  This donation was part of a nationwide-initiative on behalf of each of Harbor Freight’s more than 1,000 retail stores to donate their PPE inventory to their local hospitals.

High-Speed Passenger Rail: An Exciting Opportunity for the Future of Anderson County

High-Speed Passenger Rail: An Exciting Opportunity for the Future of Anderson County

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the Federal Railroad Authority (FRA) have just released the first phase of their study to locate a high-speed passenger rail service between Atlanta and Charlotte. All three of the possible routes under review pass through Upstate South Carolina. Two of the three possible routes have proposed stops in Anderson County.

High-speed interstate rail service is a very exciting prospect for Anderson County. It provides expanded business and employment opportunities, increased visitation to our community, access to regional cultural and entertainment opportunities, and greater connections among friends and families across the region.

GDOT and FRA are accepting public comments through Monday, November 4th.

The three routes under review are summarized below, with maps attached.

1. SOUTHERN CRESCENT ROUTE

The Southern Crescent route follows the Norfolk Southern rail corridor which currently hosts Amtrak service between Atlanta and Charlotte. Stations on this route include:

·         Charlotte Gateway

·         Charlotte Douglas International Airport

·         Gastonia

·         Spartanburg

·         Greer

·         Greenville

·         Clemson

·         Toccoa

·         Gainesville

·         Suwanee

·         Doraville

·         Downtown Atlanta

·         Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport

The Southern Crescent Route utilizes an existing rail line, however it provides the slowest service of the three potential routes. This route has no stop in Anderson County.

2. INTERSTATE 85 ROUTE

The I-85 route follows the interstate right-of-way between Atlanta and Charlotte. Stations on this route include:

·         Charlotte Gateway

·         Charlotte Douglas International Airport

·         Gastonia

·         Spartanburg

·         Greenville

·         Anderson

·         Suwanee

·         Doraville

·         Downtown Atlanta

·         Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport

The I-85 route utilizes interstate right-of-way, however it has the greatest capital costs of the three routes. This route has one stop in Anderson County, to be located along I-85. 2

3. GREENFIELD ROUTE

The Greenfield route would follow a newly constructed, dedicated rail corridor. Stations on this route include:

·         Charlotte Gateway

·         Charlotte Douglas International Airport

·         South Gastonia

·         Greenville-Spartanburg Airport

·         Anderson

·         Athens

·         Suwanee

·         Doraville

·         Downtown Atlanta

·         Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport

The Greenfield route offers the fastest travel times and the highest projected ridership of the three alternative routes. This route has one stop in Anderson County, and because of its location south of the City of Anderson, could provide considerable economic stimulus to this area of the county.

More information on the proposed Atlanta to Charlotte rail service can be found here: www.dot.ga.gov/IS/Rail/AtlantatoCharlotte.

Duke Energy Carolinas partners with Anderson County, S.C., on major battery storage project

Duke Energy Carolinas partners with Anderson County, S.C., on major battery storage project

  • Project will improve grid reliability and provide Anderson Civic Center at least 30 hours of backup power during emergencies
  • Battery storage joins solar, electric vehicles, microgrids as part of company’s plans to modernize energy infrastructure across Carolinas

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Duke Energy Carolinas is partnering with Anderson County, S.C., to build an energy storage project at the Anderson Civic Center that will be part of the company’s long-term strategy to integrate battery technology into the smart-thinking grid it is building in the Carolinas.

The battery project will also provide power to a facility that is critical during emergency situations, such as being the site of a hurricane evacuation shelter.

This project is part of the company’s ongoing plans to invest $500 million in battery storage projects across the Carolinas over the next 15 years.

“Through projects like this, we’re transforming the state’s energy infrastructure to support the two-way flow of electricity and significantly improve reliability for our customers,” said Michael Callahan, Duke Energy’s South Carolina president. “The added benefit of this project is that – in the case of a power outage – the storage system can be dedicated to the Anderson Civic Center so this critical emergency facility will be able to support residents and evacuees in time of crisis.”

The 5-megawatt lithium ion battery will be grid-tied and available for use by Duke Energy Carolinas grid operators. The battery storage system will benefit all Duke Energy Carolinas customers by helping grid operators more efficiently manage the grid, providing additional energy options and improving grid stability during periods of peak customer demand.

The battery storage project – the first of its kind for Duke Energy in the state – will be located on land adjacent to the Anderson Civic Center and will also serve as back-up power for the facility. The battery will be able to power the Civic Center in the event of an outage for at least 30 hours based on the facility’s normal usage.

“Anderson County depends greatly on reliable power at the Civic Center; especially, while it’s operating as an emergency shelter,” said Tommy Dunn, Anderson County Council chairman. “Power is critical at the Civic Center when our facility is being utilized as a command post for service providers and shelter to citizens who have been displaced. We are excited about the opportunity to partner with Duke Energy on this project that will benefit our community during times of disaster.”

The company recently submitted a request to the Public Service Commission of South Carolina to approve a provision of the lease agreement for the land from Anderson County. Once the final engineering study for connection to the power grid is complete later this year, the project will go through a competitive bidding process for construction and is expected to be in service in early 2021.

Duke Energy Carolinas serves about 591,000 customers in the Upstate region of South Carolina, including Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg, Lancaster and York counties.

Duke Energy Carolinas

Duke Energy Carolinas, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, owns nuclear, coal, natural gas, renewables and hydroelectric generation. That diverse fuel mix provides approximately 20,200 megawatts of owned electric capacity to about 2.6 million customers in a 24,000-square-mile service area of North Carolina and South Carolina.

Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK), a Fortune 150 company headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., is one of the largest energy holding companies in the U.S. It employs 30,000 people and has an electric generating capacity of 51,000 megawatts through its regulated utilities, and 3,000 megawatts through its nonregulated Duke Energy Renewables unit.

Duke Energy is transforming its customers’ experience, modernizing the energy grid, generating cleaner energy and expanding natural gas infrastructure to create a smarter energy future for the people and communities it serves. The Electric Utilities and Infrastructure unit’s regulated utilities serve approximately 7.7 million retail electric customers in six states – North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. The Gas Utilities and Infrastructure unit distributes natural gas to more than 1.6 million customers in five states – North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio and Kentucky. The Duke Energy Renewables unit operates wind and solar generation facilities across the U.S., as well as energy storage and microgrid projects.

2020 Basspro.com Bassmaster Open Set for September at Lake Hartwell

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Next year’s tournament schedule continues to take shape, as B.A.S.S. officials announced the 2020 Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens schedule on Thursday.

The schedule will once again feature four events in two divisions — Eastern and Central — with the winners of each event earning an automatic berth into the 2021 Bassmaster Classic, provided he or she has fished all four events in that division.

The Top 4 anglers from each division’s final points standings will receive an invitation to fish the 2021 Bassmaster Elite Series. But as a new addition, Elite Series invitations will also be extended to the Top 4 anglers from the cumulative standings for both divisions.

That means 12 competitors can earn a chance to pursue their dreams as Elite anglers.

“The Opens have always been about opportunity, and there are more opportunities available this year,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “Not only do we feel like we have a great lineup of lakes in each division, we’re excited about the idea that 12 anglers could have their lives changed by finishing strongly in these events.”

The schedule for the Eastern Division will begin in Kissimmee, Fla., at the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes on Jan. 15-17. Then the trail will wind its way North with trips to Cherokee Lake in Jefferson County, Tenn., on May 7-9 and Oneida Lake in Syracuse, N.Y., on Aug. 6-8.

The Eastern Division points race and the Elite Series berths that go with it will be decided at Lake Hartwell in Anderson, S.C. — site of three previous Bassmaster Classics and six major B.A.S.S. events — on Sept. 24-26.

“When you think about the Eastern Division side of the schedule — Florida in January, trips to awesome fisheries like Cherokee and Oneida where B.A.S.S. has had some great events and a finish at Hartwell, which is deeply entrenched in B.A.S.S. history — it’s hard not to be excited,” said Chris Bowes, tournament director for the Bassmaster Opens. “That’s a slate that will give anglers a chance to prove themselves — and one that fans across the country will be able to appreciate, I’m sure.”

To accommodate cooler geographic temperatures, the Central Division will begin its slate later in the year, with its season-opening event on Lewisville Lake in Lewisville, Texas, on April 9-11. Lewisville has been the site of major B.A.S.S. events only three times and hasn’t hosted an Open since 2012.

After Lewisville, the Central Division will visit Neely Henry Lake in Gadsden, Ala., on May 21-23, the Arkansas River in Muskogee, Okla., on June 18-20 and the giant-bass haven that is Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Jasper, Texas, on Sept. 10-12. The City of Jasper will serve as the local host for the Sam Rayburn event.

“The Central slate offers a fantastic variety of fisheries,” Bowes said. “Lewisville is an urban fishery that’s located right outside of Dallas. Then you have Neely Henry, a classic Coosa River fishery known for big spotted bass, the Arkansas River, which offers about every kind of structure you can imagine, and a September finish at Sam Rayburn — a place we know is capable of producing 30-pound limits.”

The payout per event will be $250,400 (based on a field of 150 anglers), giving the eight-event circuit a total payout of just over $2 million. Seven of the eight tournaments on this year’s Opens schedule topped the 150-angler mark, with five easily topping 200.

As in the past, the full field will fish the first two days, with only the Top 12 pros and co-anglers advancing to the final round. All final-round weigh-ins will be held at the nearest Bass Pro Shops location, except for at the final Central Division event at Sam Rayburn.

For the first time since 2013, entry fees will increase on the Opens circuit. Pro anglers will pay $1,800 per event with an $800 deposit due up front, while co-anglers will pay $475 per event with a $200 deposit.

Entry for pro and co-angler linking will begin online Oct. 29 for B.A.S.S Nation and Life members and B.A.S.S. members Oct. 31.  The Top 30 pros and co-anglers from each Opens division standings in 2019 will receive early entry, as well as current Elite Series pros and B.A.S.S. Nation Championship qualifiers. Any former Elite anglers who are interested in fishing the 2020Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens should contact Chris Bowes at cbowes@bassmaster.com before Oct. 8 for registration instructions.

“You’re talking eight events from mid-January to late September with trips to some of the best fisheries in the country,” Bowes said. “I’m sure a lot of anglers will agree with me when I say I wish it all started tomorrow.”

Element Greenville Opens Lab in Anderson County

Element Materials Technology (Element), today celebrated the official opening of its new $4m aerospace testing facility in Piedmont, South Carolina.

The 30,000 square foot laboratory houses one of the most impressive independent non-destructive testing (NDT) facilities in the US and operates as an extension to Element’s Hartford, Connecticut laboratory which currently services Aerospace and Power Generation clients worldwide.

The location of the Piedmont site in Anderson County, SC better facilitates both future and current demand, initially from Element’s main customer in the area, GE. The site’s position significantly reduces this key client’s lead time and supply chain logistics challenges, which played a key factor in the location decision.

Charles Noall, President & CEO at Element, conducted the official ribbon cutting and commented: “This new facility is a great addition to our Aerospace operations in the US and is a real win-win for Element, our customers and the local community in Anderson County. The investment will significantly strengthen our footprint, capacity and capabilities and enable us to deliver cost savings for our clients, while boosting the local economy and creating new job opportunities in the area.”

Councilman Jimmy Davis, Anderson Council District 6 stated: “On behalf of Anderson County, I would like to welcome Element to the area. I am delighted that the company has invested in the county’s Northern region and that we now have a world-leading presence in materials and product qualification testing, significantly enhancing the diversity of the county’s technical offering.”

Element’s new site has successfully passed the GE S1000 and AC7004 quality audits and will be NADCAP certified in Q4 2019.  It will primarily service the aerospace critical rotating parts industry, with capabilities including NDT and related chemical processing. The new laboratory will house blue etch anodize process and inspection, fluorescent penetrant inspection, ultrasonic inspection and eddy current inspection and has significant room for future expansion and growth.

The facility forms an important part of Element’s global Aerospace business which has over 80 years’ experience in both commercial and military aerospace testing and dedicates more than 3,000 technicians, engineers and scientists to the sector. The company has 29 Nadcap-accredited laboratories with 46 Nadcap accreditations, and its customer approvals, technical expertise, and geographical footprint is unrivalled in the aerospace testing, inspection and certification industry.

About Element

Element is one of the world’s leading independent providers of materials and product qualification testing, inspection and certification services to the global Aerospace; Transportation & Industrials; Fire & Building Products; and Oil & Gas and Infrastructure sectors, where failure in service is simply not an option.

We exist to help our customers to make certain that the materials, products and systems that they make are safe, quality, compliant and ultimately fit for purpose, leveraging 200 years of testing experience and our global testing capabilities.

STEC Goes All over the World but also keeps it local

Wednesday, April 17, 2019 is a great day for the youth of Pendleton Recreation Association in Anderson County. An Anderson County global business, Specialized Turf Equipment Company (STEC Pronounced [ST-ECK]) is making their playing fields safer and equal to their competition.

STEC is the industry leader in Specialized Turf Equipment distribution and is putting their expertise and manpower to work in their backyard.  They will be renovating the infields of the three ball fields so they will lay level and help drainage and improve safety for players.  They will be improving the designated football area by aerating and top dressing in order to have noticeable improvement by the fall season.

“I am excited to see local people and businesses getting involved and giving back to their community. This is great for the Town of Pendleton and Anderson County District 4.  STEC is a great company and thank you to David Taylor and his team for all their hard work” states the honorable Brett Sanders, County Council District 4 representative.

The Pendleton Recreation Association donated $2,500 for the sand and STEC is donating the additional $10,000 of seed, fertilizer, equipment and labor costs.

Pendleton Recreation Association President, Billy Wheeler, says “This is great for the Pendleton Area. We have been waiting for 6 or 7 years to have this done.  This will help with runoff and make our fields safer for our kids.”

STEC Equipment’s history dates back over 10 years. Founded by David Taylor, who left his home country of England to establish what was then BLEC USA. As General Manager, David built the American operation from scratch, essentially a one man show. In 2009 the launch of STEC Equipment was inevitable. This transition from BLEC USA to STEC Equipment was not only seamless, but proved to be successful.
